When is the spring equinox – and what does it actually mean for South Africans?

The spring equinox marks the beginning of astronomical spring in South Africa, occurring when the sun crosses directly over the equator on its way south.

This event is one of only two moments a year when the whole planet is briefly on equal footing, and it differs from the meteorological start of spring on 1 September.
