EU charges TikTok with failing to protect users’ mental health
The European Commission (EC) has provisionally ruled that TikTok's recommender system breaches the Digital Services Act (DSA). The preliminary findings focus on risk assessment and mitigation measures, with TikTok failing to adequately assess how the recommendation algorithm could lead users into 'rabbit holes' as their feed shows them more harmful content as they interact with it. This could have a negative effect on their mental health, especially for minors and vulnerable adults.
