British Crown symbol was branded on enslaved Africans, research finds

Research by the Register of British Slave Traders found that enslaved African people were branded with an identifying mark that included an emblem of the British Crown.

The project, led by Prof William Pettigrew, documents British involvement in the slave trade between the 16th and 19th Centuries and lists 13,000 individuals and hundreds of institutions known to have invested in Britain's role.
