The Core Insight

Peter Obi, once a staunch APGA loyalist who vowed never to leave and called PDP destructive, has repeatedly switched parties, from APGA to PDP (2019 VP), Labour Party (2023 presidential with 6M votes via Obidients), ADC (2025), and now NDC,exemplifying 'politics without principle' per Gandhi's Seven Social Sins. Critics highlight his avoidance of primaries and ethnic appeals as signs of opportunism unfit for 2027 presidency.

“I will not only remain in APGA, but I will die for APGA. The day I quit APGA is the day I will quit politics. APGA made me what I am today. APGA is like a movement. I have enough funds to last me outside politics any day I decide to leave APGA, which I have made up my mind never to leave. Igbos don’t need APGA in Aso Rock for them to achieve their aims. APGA is the identity and the reflection of the Igboman. No Anambrian should vote for PDP. PDP is a party alien to Igbos, The party is synonymous with destruction.”

These words, uttered over fifteen years ago by Peter Obi, underscore the deplorable practice of politics devoid of principle in Nigeria.

Obi, the architect of the quote, was the two-term governor of Anambra State under APGA; former Vice-Presidential candidate under PDP; and presidential candidate under the Labour Party. He now stands for everything antithetical to what he espoused.

Obi is a snollygoster playing partisan politics without APGA, despite confessing it made him what he is. He claimed Igbos don’t need APGA in Aso Rock but has switched parties in a desperate bid to bring Igbos there. He joined PDP, the party he said no Anambrian should vote for as it is alien to Igbos and synonymous with destruction.

Timeline of Defections

  • APGA (2003–governor)
  • PDP (2019 VP candidate)
  • Labour Party (2022–2023 presidential, 6 million votes)
  • ADC (2025)
  • Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) – latest move

Obi avoids party primaries and practices politics of survival over principle. His 2023 presidential run garnered six million votes with minimal funds, powered by youth "Obidients" via social media, selling a narrative of fresh governance.

Gandhi's Seven Social Sins

Obi's brand evokes Mahatma Gandhi’s Seven Social Sins (1925, traced to Frederick Lewis Donaldson): Politics without principle; Wealth without work; Pleasure without conscience; Knowledge without character; Commerce without morality; Science without humanity; Religion without sacrifice. (Rights without responsibilities added later.)

Politics without principle is a core sin destroying society when ethics are subordinated.

Obi epitomizes this, contradicting himself on national issues and personal values. He pretends humility yet is a crass capitalist. In NDC, he seeks another ticket on a platter of gold, ready to create chaos and defect if denied. His pursuit consolidates his business empire, not national amelioration. His 2023 use of religion and ethno-tribal sentiments, plus lack of commendable public service orientation, disqualify him.

Having betrayed APGA, PDP, Labour Party (post-6M votes), and ADC, Obi cannot be a reliable 2027 presidential candidate. Nigeria cannot afford him or his ilk, as it perpetuates democracy as a charade for the oppressed.
